Greenville University Choir to Tour Mexico in May 2019

The Greenville University Choir will perform in Mexico from May 12-26. Concert venues include churches in Mexico City and Puebla City, as well as concert halls at the world-renowned Universidad Nacional Autònoma de México (UNAM) and the Conservatorio Nacional de Mùsica (National Conservatory of Music).

Founded in 1927 by Dr. Robert W. Woods, the Greenville University Choir is widely known for performing sacred choral music of the highest quality. This 92nd Anniversary year tour program includes selections from Latin America, Africa, Europe, and North America.

The Greenville University Choir has toured annually throughout the United States and Europe and has performed with ensembles including the Boston Camerata and the Kingsbury Ensemble. It has appeared multiple times at the Illinois Music Educators Conference and the American Choral Directors Association’s Central Division Convention. The Choir regularly joins with the Greenville Choral Union for concerts of larger choral-orchestral works such as Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and the annual Christmas performance of Handel’s Messiah.

The ensemble consists of 30 students currently pursuing various fields of liberal arts study, including the University’s four music degree programs.

As the flagship choral ensemble of Greenville University, the Choir presents as many as 20 off-campus performances each year as part of its annual tour. Students’ dedication to the program is consistently made evident by the professional quality of their performances.

Conductor Jeffrey S. Wilson received a bachelor of music in piano from Augustana College (Rock Island, Illinois). He earned a master of music in choral music and a doctor of musical arts in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Wilson has served as conductor of the choir since 1996.

Greenville University's new five-year strategic plan emphasizes the value of expanding its reach: "We commit to preparing our students, faculty and staff for engaging in a diverse, global and interconnected world."

A detailed itinerary of the Choir’s performance tour in Mexico follows.
