G.U.’s Science and Faith Conference Tackles Evolution, Aliens and More
Published: April 13, 2021
Tough questions about the relationship between science and faith take center stage at a conference hosted by Greenville University November 8-10, 2019.
The Science Through the Eyes of Faith (STEF) Conference invites the intellectually curious to hear from professors, researchers and theologians as they discuss challenging science-related questions, such as:
- Can we reconcile the theory of evolution with Christian theology?
- Are we alone in the universe?
- Can we explain the prevalence of suffering in the natural world from a theological standpoint?
- What is creation care and why does it matter?
- How should Christians respond to CRISPR gene editing and other rapid advances in biotechnology?
Speakers at the STEF Conference will tailor their material to the general public, not just professional scientists, stresses G.U.s Department of Physics and Engineering Chair Hyung Choi. The University also invites teachers, students, professors and the intellectually curious to this faith-filled discussion.
Speakers include:
- William Phillips, Nobel laureate for physics research.
- Jeff Schloss, distinguished professor of biology at Westmont College.
- Howard A. Smith, senior astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, author of Let There Be Light: Modern Cosmology and Kabbalah (New World Library, 2006).
- Leonard Vander Zee, editor-in-chief of Faith Alive Christian Resources.
- Eleonore Stump, Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University, Gifford Lecturer, past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers, Aquinas Medal recipient.
- Fred Van Dyke, executive director of Au Sable Institute.
- and more!
Participating G.U. faculty represent both the sciences and theology, including Hyung Choi (physics and engineering), Lindsey Mao (biology), Daryl Cox (chemistry), Eugene Dunkley (biology), Ben Wayman (theology and ministry) and Aubrey McClain (Jewish-Christian studies).
The conferences goalto facilitate connection between Christian faith and scientific pursuitcontinues the mission championed for years by recently-retired G.U. chemistry professor Darrell Iler, who led the Greenville Religion and Science Society (GRASS) and taught courses on science and faith at the University.
