The Tradition Continues: Duke Divinity School Awards Full Scholarship to Bastian School Grad
Published: April 13, 2021
Any financial award that reduces tuition is welcome, but one that covers the full cost of tuition cant be beat. Greenville University graduate Keli (Totton 16) Pennington will begin studies at Duke Divinity School in the fall on a "full ride" scholarship.
In Good CompanyKelis success continues a notable tradition for Greenville graduates at Duke Divinity School. Alumni Niquita (Reinhard 12) Hohm, Amanda (Griffin 12) DiMiele and Greenville Universitys James F. and Leona N. Andrews Chair in Christian Unity Ben Wayman 02 all received full ride awards from Duke.
As an undergraduate, Keli majored in religion and communication/public relations. She has since worked here on the Greenville campus in the Office of Admissions. She advises incoming students to say yes on several fronts:
- Say yes when a resident chaplain invites you to an event.
- Say yes to participating in class discussion.
- Say yes when someone invites you to something you have never done before.
- Say yes to opportunities to get involved in campus.
- Say yes to listening to others' stories.
- Say yes to engaging the people and experiences at Greenville so as to make the most of your time here.
As a student, Keli said yes to full immersion in her studies. She recalls History of Judaism and Introduction to Worship as her favorite classes.
These courses have had a lasting impact and changed the way I thought about the Church, both past and present, she says.
Thinking Critically and Imaginatively About the Christian FaithKeli said Duke extended the generous award to her based on the application she submitted, her resume, references and an essay. Part of the essay detailedhersense of vocation in Christian ministry andpoints of affirmation that help her understand her calling.
I'm so thankful for all of the professors that poured into me while at Greenville, Keli adds. They pushed me to think more critically and more imaginatively about the Christianfaith, the church and mycall to ministry. The preparation I received here didn't just prepare me to attend seminary orto pursue ordination, it prepared me for the adventure of a lifetime: to passionatelylove and serve the Lord and all of his people.
