Choral auditions will take place during New Student Orientation (Friday, August 23; 10:00am-2:00pm / Saturday, August 24; 3:30pm-5:30pm / Sunday, August 25; 8:30-10:30pm).

2019-20 Greenville University Choral Ensembles

MUEN 141/341 Greenville University Choir (A Cappella Choir) - 1 Credit

The Greenville Choir, founded by Professor Robert W. Woods in 1927, has become an outstanding symbol of the University. It offers students from throughout the University an opportunity to sing exemplary sacred choral literature in an excellent, mixed choir setting. Concerts are given throughout the year, including an extended annual tour. GU Choir also performs with the Greenville Choral Union.  Membership in the University Choir is by audition and includes the expectation of a year-long commitment. (Offered every semester) – Four Rehearsals per week

MUEN 142/342 Greenville University Chorale - 1/2 Credit

Chorale is a mixed choir which focuses on foundational choral literature while also giving appropriate attention to developing student skills in music reading and vocal technique. As part of the Greenville Choral Union, Chorale performs large-scale choral orchestral works such as Handel’s “Messiah”. Membership is open to all students and an assessment audition is required. (Offered every semester) – Two Rehearsals per week

MUEN 163/363 Greenville University Chamber Singers - 1/2 Credit

Chamber Singers is a select vocal ensemble which performs an eclectic mix of sacred literature from the 16th century to the present day and secular works ranging from folk songs and part songs to vocal jazz and a cappella pieces. Concurrent enrollment in the Greenville University Choir is required. Students are expected to remain in the ensemble for the full year. Membership is by invitation. (Offered every semester.)Two Rehearsals per week

Greenville Choral Union - 0 Credits

Choral Union is a large mixed chorus which prepares and performs choral-orchestral masterworks such as Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Requiem.  Membership is open to students, staff, faculty and community members.  No audition is required.  (Offered each fall semester and occasional spring semesters.) – One Rehearsal per week


Summer, 2019 (Rev. 7/3/19)

Greenville University Choir, Chorale, Chamber Singers and Choral Union

Students desiring to participate in the Greenville University Choir, Chorale or Chamber Singers must do a choral audition.  Upon auditioning each student will be placed in an appropriate ensemble. There are limited openings for G.U. Choir (the touring choir) and Chamber SingersAuditionees who are placed in G.U. Chorale this year are strongly urged to sing in Chorale and to re-audition for G.U. Choir next year. Members of G.U. Chorale will also be put on a waiting list for the G.U. Choir should an opening occur this year.

Due to the nature of the GU Choir and the GU Chamber Singers, a one-year commitment, (Fall and Spring Semesters, including Commencement Weekend) is expected upon accepting membership. 

No audition is required to sing in the Choral Union. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings beginning on September 17.

Choral Audition Processes

Round One (General Auditions)

Who: New Students (Freshmen & Transfers) and Returning Students
What: Auditions for Greenville University Choral Programs
Where: Dr. Wilson's Studio (Whitlock Music Center, Rm. 203)
When: By Appointment

Step #1: Sign up for an individual audition time at Dr. Wilson's Studio 

New Students (Freshman and Transfer Students)

  • Sign up in advance by contacting Dr. Wilson
    • Friday, August 23 from 10:00am-2:00pm
    • Saturday, August 24 from 3:30pm-5:30pm
    • Sunday, August 25 from 8:30pm-10:00pm

New & Returning Students

  • Sign up for other times as arranged with Dr. Wilson

Step #2: Complete the choral audition application form and bring it to your audition. *Please warm-up prior to your audition*

Round One Auditions Consist Of: 

  • Vocalizing throughout your range
  • Tonal Memory
  • Sight-Singing
  • Singing your voice part on “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee” with piano accompaniment. (Printed music will be provided at the audition).

Call-Backs for Round Two will be posted at Dr. Wilson’s Studio (Rm. 203, Whitlock Music Center) on Sunday Evening (8/25) or Monday morning (8/26).  Please read the call-back lists carefully since some people will be asked to be present at two call-back auditions. 

New students interested in auditioning for Chamber Singers should indicate their interest on the choral application form.  Call-backs for Chamber Singers are on Thursday, August 29.                                                                                              

Round Two (Callbacks for G.U. Choir)

Who: New Students who are on the Call-Back List and Returning G.U. Choir Members 
Callbacks for those being considered for G.U. Choir
Where: Whitlock Music Center Recital Hall
When: Monday, August 26 & Tuesday, August 27th

  • Soprano – Monday, August 26 from 3:30-4:10 pm
  • Alto – Monday, August 26 from 4:05-4:45 pm
  • Tenor – Tuesday, August 27 from 3:30-4:10 pm
  • Bass – Tuesday, August 27 from 4:05-4:45 pm

Round Two Auditions Consist Of:

  • Learning a portion of a choral selection with a group (music to be provided at audition)
  • Singing the selection individually
  • Singing the selection with other vocalists.

When Will I Know the Results of G.U. Choir and G.U. Chorale Auditions?

The final rosters for both G.U. Choir and G.U. Chorale will be posted on either Tuesday Evening (8/27) or Wednesday Morning (8/28).  Students should then make sure that they are enrolled in the appropriate class (G.U. Choir – MUEN 141/341; G.U. Chorale – MUEN 142/342).

Call-Backs for Chamber Singers will be posted at the same time as rosters for G.U. Chorale and G.U. Choir.  A person must be a member of G.U. Choir in order to be in Chamber Singers.                                                                                                             

Round Three (Call-Backs for Chamber Singers)

Who: Individuals accepted into the G.U. Choir 
What: Callbacks for the Chamber Singers
Where: Whitlock Music Center Recital Hall
When: Thursday, August 29 from 4:45-5:45pm. No appointment is necessary. All students will audition together beginning at 4:45 pm.

Chamber Singer Auditions Consist Of:

  • Learning and singing several choral selections with a small group (music to be provided at audition).

When Will I Know the Results of Chamber Singers Auditions?

The final roster for G.U. Chamber Singers will likely be posted at Rm. 203, Whitlock Music Center by either Friday, August 30 or Monday, September 2.  Students who are selected for Chamber Singers should then make sure that they are enrolled in MUEN 163/363.

Auditionees who are not invited to join the G.U. Chamber Singers this year will be put on a waiting list in case an opening should occur and are strongly urged to re-audition again next year.
