GU mourns the passing of Deb Miller, registrar and articulations coordinator

Published: August 26, 2021

The Greenville University community is grieving the recent passing of Deb (Devall 78) Miller, who served as registrar and in various other roles during her 24-year career at GU. She was 65.

Deb officially began as Registrar at Greenville College in 1989. She held various roles over the years, at one point changing roles so she could be at home more with her daughter and son. Deb worked in a part-time capacity for part of 2002 before retiring that same year. She couldnt stay away though, and returned in 2010 to work with GUs School of Education, then began serving more as a part-time articulations coordinator.

Deb worked over the past several years updating and creating new articulation agreements with local community colleges and other educational providers. Just this year, she was instrumental in facilitating at least 11 first-time agreements, including one that was years in the making with St. Johns College of Nursing. The much-anticipated agreement brings a four-year track for students to earn a bachelor of science in nursing. Deb liked to say that articulation agreements meant that every credit counts in a students academic journey when they transferred to GU. The University currently has over 80 agreements with 14 regional colleges, many of which Deb had a direct role in completing.

Deb was the registrar when I started at GU in 1995, says Dave Holden, GU dean of graduate and adult studies. Whether she was Registrar or helping with administration in our School of Education or Director of Articulations, Deb was masterful at bringing order to complex situations, but also keeping us laughing with her great sense of humor. We will so miss her.

Please be in prayer for Debs family and the GU community during this difficult time. Deb is survived by husband Charles, son Ronnie, and daughter Kayla.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 28, at First Church of God, 3001 County Rd 1800 N in Vandalia, Illinois. Visitation will also be held at the church from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, August 27 and one hour before the service on Saturday.
