Edwall Receives Prestigious Cambridge Scholarship

Greenville College alumna Christy Edwall '08, of Seattle, Washington, was recently awarded a prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The highly competitive full-cost scholarship is awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time post-graduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Edwall will pursue a master's of philosophy degree in English studies.

More than 3500 applicants competed for the award. Only 51 scholarships were granted. Selection criteria included outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

Edwall will use the award to research the relationship between 'madness' and poetic form, especially by poets suffering incarceration. She initially grew interested in the literary representation of mental distress by poetic form when she studied at Oxford as part of Greenville College's study abroad option.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Its 1074 scholars and alumni represent 94 countries.
