Reading, MA Overview

MAE-Reading is a 35 semester hour program that includes practicum courses and leads to the completion of the Master of Arts in education.

The MAE-Reading program is fully accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education for K-12 Reading Specialist and Reading Teacher endorsement, and has been approved by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Students typically complete the program in 16-21 months depending on previous individual course work. A Reading Specialist license may be awarded upon successful completion of degree requirements, state test, and verification of two years of teaching experience in Illinois. This license will allow the holder to become a director of Reading in K-12 Illinois public schools. Other opportunities upon completion of the program include: become a reading teacher, teach at a community college, or simply improve your classroom teaching methods for all age groups. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.

Convenient courses are offered one night a week with the exception of one daytime summer practicum. Students complete the entire program with one group of classmates. The cohort model creates an ideal environment where mature teachers benefit from peer interaction and classroom support. Groups begin the MAE-Reading program at specific start and end dates. Greenville University is approved to offer the program in Alton, Belleville, Centralia, Godfrey, Greenville, Lincoln, and Litchfield. Class locations are dependent on student enrollment.

Edu 508 Emergent/Primary Reading, 509 Intermediate Reading and 510 Content Area Reading/Secondary Literacy are now also open to guest students. If you have a desire to take these courses for personal and career development, you can now take them without being admitted to the program.

Reading Specialist License vs. Reading Endorsement

Know what you're getting before you invest in your education. Reading programs are NOT all the same. Our MAE-Reading program prepares qualified Reading Teachers and also meets state requirement for Reading Specialist Certification. The Reading Teacher Endorsement is an endorsement on a certificate and is valid only for the grades specified in the existing certificate. The Reading Specialist Certificate allows the holder to teach reading K-12. It is the highest level of reading certification in the state and signifies a greater expertise in reading than the reading teacher.
