Middle Grades Education Major Overview

A Bachelor of Science in middle grades education will prepare and license you for a career in teaching grades 5-8. With our double major in elementary education or secondary Education, you can teach at a wide variety of levels.

Four tracks are available for the middle grades education program. The options include language arts, science, social studies, or math.  No matter your track, you will receive over 300 hours of field experience in the middle grades classroom. Field experience opportunities in a myriad of classrooms provides the hands-on learning that reflects the quality of education that you expect from the Greenville University School of Education.

In the Middle Grades program at Greenville University, you will:

  • Develop curriculum, methods, and materials for grades 5-8.
  • Learn to create literature rich experiences, while developing character within the classroom. 
  • Develop a personal philosophy of middle grades education through research and discussion-based courses.
  • Understand the individual needs of each child, and create an environment where differences are celebrated. Understanding these differences, you can provide an environment for all children to be successful learners.

Why Earn your Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle Grades or a Middle Grades license at Greenville University?

Earn Multiple Majors. You can complete dual licensure requirements for middle grades education and elementary education (grades 1-8) or complete the dual licensure requirements for middle grades education and secondary education (grades 5-12) in a four-year bachelor’s degree.
 
Job Placement.  At Greenville University, our School of Education graduates have a 90% job placement rate working within the field of Education within the first year of graduation.

Accreditation.  Our School of Education is accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). 
 
Character Education. Earn a nationally recognized certification in Character Education from Character Plus, and learn to educate the whole child.

Licensure Exams.  Students at Greenville currently have a 99% pass rate on the edTPA, a high stakes test required in the State of Illinois for Licensure. 

You can receive your Middle Grades license in one of two ways:

1. Complete the full four-year middle grades program at Greenville University in one of the following tracks:

  • Math
  • Language arts
  • Science
  • Social science

2. Participate in the focused middle grades licensure program.

  • The focused licensure program is for non-degree seeking candidates (must already hold a bachelor’s degree and an Illinois teaching license).
  • Apply for admission to the Teacher Education Program with a focused program in middle grades education and specific content area track.
      • Math
      • Language arts
      • Science
      • Social science
  • The middle grades focused program features both online and face-to-face courses.
