Mathematics Education Major Overview

A Bachelor of Science in secondary education will prepare and license you for a career in teaching students from grades 9-12. As a secondary education major, you'll take professional education credits dispersed with the content specialization courses you need to pursue a teaching career in your chosen area of study.


As a mathematics education major, you will gain the experience and education you need to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Our mathematics courses focus on mathematics as well as natural and computer science. 

In the Mathematics Education program at Greenville University, you will:

  • Develop curriculum, methods, and materials for students in grades 9-12. 
  • Develop a personal philosophy of Secondary Education through research and discussion-based courses.
  • Learn how to facilitate Character Education programs.
  • Understand the individual needs of each student, and create an environment where differences are celebrated. Understanding these differences, you can provide an environment for all students to be successful learners.

Triple Major. You can earn three majors by meeting your content specific, secondary education, and middle grades major requirements. You can earn a triple major to get dual licensure in middle grades and secondary education.                        

Job Placement.  At Greenville University our School of Education graduates have a 90% job placement rate working within the field of Education within the first year of graduation.

Accreditation.  Our School of Education is accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

Character Education.  Earn a nationally recognized certification in Character Education from Character Plus, and learn to educate the whole child.

Licensure Exams.  Students at Greenville currently have a 99% pass rate on the edTPA, a high stakes test required in the State of Illinois for Licensure.

Collaborative Faculty. Our content specific and education faculty will communicate closely with you to help you reach your goals.

Add Endorsements. We will assist you in adding endorsements to your major, allowing you to teach a myriad of subjects like Art in grades 9-12.

Transfer Friendly.  Due to our articulation agreements, Greenville University sets the bar for the requirements for several of the surrounding community colleges, making for an easy transfer and schedule creation.
