History Education Major Overview

A Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education will prepare and license students for a career in teaching students from grades 9-12. Secondary Education majors take professional education credits dispersed with the content specialization courses they need to pursue a teaching career in their chosen area of study. Along with earning their Secondary Education, students also earn a degree in their content specific area. Because Secondary Education majors can easily add on a Middle Grades major with a content specific method course, triple-majoring in a content specific area, Secondary Education, and Middle Grades is very possible.

Our program is accredited through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Education (CAEP) at Greenville University and is designed with courses to ensure teachers are prepared for the culturally diverse classroom. In this program, students will take part in practical classroom experiences by completing over 300 field experience hours starting their freshman year.

Social Studies: History

As a History Education major, you will gain the experience and education you need to teach common English subjects like Composition and Literature at the secondary level. Our English courses focus on experiencing and analyzing the diversity and depth of literature in the English language; investigating the origins of that language; cultivating exceptional writing skills in academic, professional, and creative contexts; and reading texts within a global context. This coursework is interspersed with your education courses, helping you learn to integrate the two disciplines.

In the History Education program at Greenville University, you will:

  • Develop curriculum, methods, and materials for students in grades 9-12.
  • Develop a personal philosophy of Secondary Education through research and discussion-based courses.
  • Learn how to facilitate Character Education programs.
  • Understand the individual needs of each student, and create an environment where differences are celebrated. Understanding these differences, you can provide an environment for all students to be successful learners.
