Pre-NSO Placement Day: Friday, August 21

Welcome to Greenville College and thank you for your interest in participating in musical activities at Greenville College! Our Pre-NSO Music Placement Day provides opportunities for you to meet the music faculty and incoming music students while completing the necessary placements and auditions to start you on the right path with your musical pursuits at GC. We look forward to your arrival!

What’s Pre-NSO Music Placement Day?

On Friday, August 21 we are holding events specific to students who plan to be music majors, minors or participants in one of our music ensembles at Greenville College. By completing these requirements before other students arrive, it will help us place you in the right classes for your skills, talents and direction as a musician.

Pre-NSO Schedule

9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Check-in for Music Majors and Music Ensemble Auditionees
8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Marching Band Practice (alternative placement exams and audition times will be arranged for members of the GC Marching Band).
10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Come & Go: Music Placement Exams - Whitlock Music Center
10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Choral Ensemble Auditions - Whitlock Music Center, Room 203
Voice Placement Auditions - Whitlock Music Center, Room 213
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch - Armington Dining Commons
3 - 5 p.m. Worship Arts Ensemble Auditions - Whitlock Music Center, Room 215
5 - 6 p.m. Dinner with Music Department Faculty - Armington Dining Commons, Krober Room
8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. Post-Dinner Music Department Activity- TBA

Placement Exams and Auditions

Choral Auditions

Students who wish to join one of the Greenville College choral ensembles (Greenville College Chorale, GC Choir or GC Chamber Singers) must do a choral audition. Sign up for an audition time in Room 203 in Whitlock Music Center. Contact Dr. Jeff Wilson, Director of Choral Studies with questions by email ( or phone (618.664.6561).  Please complete a choral audition application form and bring it with you to your audition.

Music Placement Exams

Music Placement Exams are given to ensure that you are placed in the courses that best suit and challenge your current level as a musician. All Music Majors should complete both the music theory and piano placement exams. Any student desiring to take applied lessons in voice, piano, guitar or drums/percussion should do a placement exam on their respective instrument.

These exams are tentatively scheduled to take place between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, August 21 in the following locations:

  • Music Theory: Whitlock Music Center, Room 308
  • Piano: WMC, Room 200
  • Drums: WMC, Room 306
  • Guitar: WMC, Room 307

*The Music Theory placement exam may also be completed by mail before August 21.

Voice Placement Auditions

Students who plan to take applied voice lessons as a requirement for their major or elective class. Two semesters of voice study are required for both Worship Arts and Bachelor of Music Education students. Applied voice lessons are required for all students declaring voice as their primary instrument.  


  • Prepare 1 verse and 1 chorus of a song to evaluate your vocal technique (recorded accompaniment or self-accompaniment are permitted). If needed, hymnals will be available at the audition.
  • Students with previous private voice study should prepare a solo voice repertoire list.

These auditions will take place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Whitlock Music Center, Room 213 on Friday, August 21. To sign up for a time, pick a day and time on the sign up sheet posted on the door of Room 213 or schedule an appointment with Dr. Debra Marsch by email ( or phone (618.664.6574). 

Worship Arts Ensemble Auditions 

These auditions are for students interested in joining the Touring and/or Worship Arts Ensembles. These ensembles consist of the groups that play on a regular basis for weekly Chapel services and travel to churches and other schools. We are looking for the following members: singers (male and female in contemporary styles), acoustic, electric and bass guitar players, piano/keyboard players, drummers and other instrumentalists (i.e.: alternative percussion and string players).

These auditions will take place at two times on Friday, August 21 from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, August 23 from 8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. in Whitlock Music Center, Room 215. Sign up sheets for audition times will be posted on Paul Sunderland's office door (Room 201) in Whitlock Music Center.
