Volleyball Showcases New Lineup, Sweeps Robert Morris 3-0

Published: April 13, 2021

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Utilizing a new 6-2 offensive attack, the Panthers improved their record to 4-3 on Monday night and completed the season sweep of Robert Morris Springfield.

In 2011 the Panthers have been primarily running a one setter offense. Monday night the team provided a new look with the addition of a 6-2 offensive system with the intent of adding offensive weapons to the Panthers already stellar arsenal. The adjustment paid off for the Black & Orange as the Eagles struggled to answer Greenvilles attack in the decisive 3-0 victory.

We are a very deep team and we are still trying to find a lineup that will be most effective before we start conference play, stated head coach Tom Ackerman. We feel that we have the players to be flexible and effective in many situations.

Leading the way offensively was sophomore Corinne Coon. The OH tallied 9 kills and committed no hitting errors. Coons effort was followed closely by junior Ansley DeVreize and freshman Kristin Frey who both added 7 kills in the win.

Setters Hannah Groves and Janell Crow helped account for Greenvilles productive offensive display, posting 15 and 16 assists respectively. Junior Tricia Gall controlled the net from her MB position, as she contributed 6 block assists and 1 block solo.

As a team the Panthers notched 14 block assists, suffocating the Eagles offensively.

Im pleased with our performance, but we have a lot of work to do before this weekend, commented Ackerman. We travel to Kentucky and play both Spalding and Webster, and our game will have to improve if we want to handle those caliber of teams.

The Panthers will return to action this Thursday night as they play host to Illinois College at 7:00 pm in HJ Long gymnasium.
