Volleyball Notches Second Straight SLIAC Championship, Clears Eureka 3-0

GREENVILLE, Ill. The Panthers wrapped up 2011 conference play on Tuesday night with a straight-set sweep over Eureka College and claimed a share of their second consecutive SLIAC crown.

Greenville overpowered the visiting Red Devils of Eureka with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 sweep and improved their seasons successful campaign to 21-7 (14-2 SLIAC).

Offensively the Panthers used a well-rounded team effort to dispose of the visiting squad. Freshman Nicole Schaeffer dominated the match with 16 kills and only three errors. Sophomore Corinne Coon posted 11 kills with no errors on 14 attempts, and junior MB Tricia Gall added 11 kills of her own while committing only two errors. Senior Jannell Nelly Crow contributed 36 assits in the winning effort.

The team played great tonight, and continued to improve offensively, stated head coach Tom Ackerman. It feels great to win another SLIAC championship, and we look forward to the conference tournament and hope our preparation pays off.

GC volleyball will close the 2011 regular season with a non-conference bout at Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, Ill. at 7:00 pm. The Black & Orange will then shift their focus to Webster University as they prepare for the first round of the SLIAC tournament on Saturday. Greenville will play in St. Louis due to losing a coin toss to the Gorloks of Webster to decide home-court advantage throughout tournament play.
