GREENVILLE, Ill. GC Softball collided with SLIAC top-seed Fontbonne on Thursday night and found themselves on the losing end of a 17-0, 6-4 evening twinbill at Lady Panther Field.

The Lady Griffins of Fontbonne University outpaced Greenville 23-4 on the day, and took the first contest 17-0 while edging out a 6-4 win in the capper.

Greenville sophomore Sarah Gerig was the Black & Oranges lead contributor in the slugfest. Gerig delivered a towering two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of game twos fifth inning that inched the Panther squad within one run of the visitors.

However, Greenville failed to capitalize on the close margin and FU added an insurance run in the sixth to close the 6-4 battle.

Defensively the home club struggled from the outset, as pitching issues and a flurry of untimely errors cost GC valuable opportunities. The Panthers called on all four members of their pitching staff in game ones 17-0 debacle, with senior Lindsey Schuberth picking up the loss. Freshman Jessica Laubecher was given the start in game two and went seven innings full and allowed only four runs. Despite Laubechers efforts she was charged the loss in the 6-4 decision.

With the sweep Greenville College softball drops to 12-16 (6-4 SLIAC) and slides down to the fifth spot in the conference standings. Play for the Panthers will resume on Saturday, April 14 as they travel to Carlinville, Ill. for a double-header against Blackburn College.
