Softball Struggles to Find Groove During Day Two Action in Arkansas

BATESVILLE, Ark. After a 0-2 first day start to their season in Arkansas on Friday, thesoftball teamturnedaround on Saturday to face Benedictine-Springfield and host Lyon College. Though the womenhung tough they were unable to muster a win, losing 9-8 to Benedictineand 13-0 to Lyon.

Game one pitted GC against the NAIA's Benedictine-Springfield.Behind solid hitting, the Lady Panthers put themselves in position to win the game late in the seventhinning. Benedictine, however, held off the late surge to edge Greenville and clinch the close 8-7 heartbreaker.

"We never gave up, said head coach Brian Reinhard. We had a great comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh but just couldnt quite finish. Im incredibly proud of our ladies for how hard they battled. They always believed.

Despite the loss, the Lady Panthers went 11-for-33 at the plate and only struck out three times collectively. Individually, Greenville was led by shortstop Angie Doherty who batted 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Pitcher Lindsey Schuberth also turned in an impressive performance going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Schuberth, who went seven innings and struck out four was charged with her second loss of the road trip.

In the second half of the double-header, the Lady Panthers took the field against host Lyon College. Lyon dominated from first pitch, holding the GC squad to five total hits on the day. Greenville failed to keep up with Lyon Colleges offensive production and eventually fell 13-0. Headlining the Lady Panthers efforts in the loss was first baseman Rachel Brewer who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Greenville's sophomore pitcher Angela Sheets was dealt her second loss of the weekend following the shutout.

We are a great hitting team and we definitely faced some of the toughest competition we'll see in our season, said Reinhard. We are excited to face Missouri Baptist next week, and start building momentum."

The softball team (0-4)willhit the diamond looking for their first win Thursday, March 3, as they host Missouri Baptist in a 3p.m.doubleheader.
