Softball splits opening games in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The softball team opened their spring break week with a loss to Wisconsin - Stout and a win over Wisconsin - Stevens Point. The Lady Panthers fell in the first game 13-7 and came back for a 7-5 win in game two.

In the day's first game, Greenville knocked out Stout's starting pitcher early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Stout put five runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second and two in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead.

Greenville answered with two runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score. Stout added a single run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, and they added five runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Becca Oldham was the losing pitcher as she threw 6.1 innings and allowed 13 runs, 10 earned, on 16 hits.

Anaya Tobiason was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, Tiffany Samsoe produced three hits in four at bats including two home runs and five RBI in Greenville's win.

The Lady Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first and four in the top of the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Stevens Point closed Greenville's lead to a single run in the bottom of the sixth before Greenville tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Hannah Burger was the winning pitcher as she went 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on 10 hits. Becca Oldham got the save with 1.1 innings of relief.

Andrea Martin went 3-for-4, and Jessica Laubecher was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Lady Panthers face No. 16 St. Thomas and Hope on Tuesday.
