HENDERSON, Tenn. -- The softball season commenced on Saturday as the Lady Panthers traveled to Freed-Hardeman and split a doubleheader. Greenville lost the first game 9-1 in five innings before holding on for a 6-5 win in the second contest as head coach Tracy Cromer opened her Greenville College career.

Greenville's season started right as they got their lone run of game one in the top of the first inning. Tiffany Samsoe singled to center, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Becca Oldham.

Freed-Hardeman quickly answered Greenville's tally with a run of their own in the bottom of the first before tacking on three runs in the bottom of the third and five in the bottom of the fourth.

Oldham picked up the loss for Greenville as she hurled four innings and gave up nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits and a walk. Oldham was victimized by a pair of home runs.

Bryn McKie and Andrea Martin each picked up two hits.

The second game started just as game one with Greenville getting a run in the top of the first. Anaya Tobiason led off by getting hit by a pitch, McKie advanced Tobiason to second with a single, and a groundout by Samsoe advanced the runners to second and third. After a walk to Oldham, Martin flew out to centerfield, picking up the sacrifice fly, and driving in Tobiason.

Freed-Hardeman posted three runs of Hannah Burger in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Greenville posted three runs in the top of the second. McKie got an RBI single to plate Amy Sheets who led off with an infield single. Oldham later drove in McKie with an RBI single, and Samsoe scored when a fly ball by Martin was dropped by the leftfielder.

The Lady Panthers posted single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, an RBI double by Jessica Laubecher chased Samsoe home. Then in the fifth, McKie's RBI single allowed Sheets to score.

FHU got two runs in the bottom of the sixth and left the tying and winning runs on the bases when Burger closed the game.

McKie went 3-for-5 in game two with a run scored and two RBI. Oldham was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Sheets was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Burger pitched the seven inning complete game, limiting FHU to five runs on six hits and four walks.

The Lady Panthers (1-1) host Westminster on Thursday, March 12, in early-season SLIAC action.
