Gray leads the way as Greenville finishes sixth in NCAA

May 23, 2015

CANTON, N.Y. -- The run of national success for the Greenville men's track and field program has reached new heights.  Riding the national championship of senior Bruce Gray in the 100 meter dash and a runner up finish by Gray in the 200, Greenville accumulated 27 points to place sixth overall, it's best overall finish at the national meet in school history.

Gray extended his school record by collecting his 13th, 14th, and 15th All-American awards at the event.

Leading off the day, Gray participated in the 4x100 meter relay with Terran Daniels, Jonah Peoples, and Jarrid Williams as the group clocked a time of 41.05 seconds to place seventh and collect two points.

The 4x100 was a warmup for Gray as he moved on to take a national championship in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.24 seconds, improving his school record.  The national championship for Gray was Greenville's first since Edgar Townsend was the 110 meter hurdles champion in 2010.

Overall, it was G.C.'s fifth national championship and first in an event that was not the hurdles.  The Panthers previous national champions were Jarrod Renford, 110 meter hurdles in 2008; Townsend in the 110 meter hurdles in 2009 and 2010; and Townsend in the 55 meter hurdles in 2010.

But Gray wasn't finished.  He competed later in the 200 meter dash and finished as national runner up with a time of 21.30 seconds to give Greenville another eight points.

Freshman Andrew Sharp showed the Panthers a glimpse of what might be to come as he placed fourth overall in the 800 meter run.  He completed the race in 1:53.18 to gain five points for Greenville.

The Panthers entered the outdoor championships as it's number 12 rated team, but showed the field that they were better by improving by six positions to end at No. 6.
