Partners In Life and Practice: Zach and Bethany Middleton

Published: April 13, 2021

Zach 06 and Bethany (Petit 07) Middletonare part of a profile series on GC couples whomet as undergrads, married, and then took on daunting but rewarding work as health care providerstogether.

How Did They Meet?

It started with matching injuries. Both suffered a common runners injury during the first week at training camp for cross-country. Temporarily absent from practice, they worked together doing chores for the team. In retrospect, he would say that he knew, even on that trip, that he wanted to get to know me better, Bethany says of Zach, but I wasnt even looking [to date anyone]. After a year of close friendship, they both knew a relationship was right for them.

Career Trajectory

After their marriage in 2007, Bethany entered dental school. Zach followed just a few years later. A lot of people in dental school will say, I cant imagine getting married during school, Bethany says. But honestly, for us, I cant imagine going through dental school without him. Now residents of Springfield, IL, Zach owns a family dental practice, Middleton Dental, and Bethany is a partner at Groesch, Longos and Middleton Orthodontics.

Challenges and Rewards

Zach is learning to balance his dental work with the time and decision making needed to keep a small business afloat. Bethany, meanwhile, takes on the challenge of switching mental focus between complicated patient cases all day long.

Both find a career in health care rewarding. The coolest opportunity we have is to be able to help people in ways that they cant help themselves, Bethany says.

Still Abides the Memory Ever

The Middletons have vacationed with former classmates and attended homecoming reunions with old friends. GC faculty appear in their wedding photos. They even took maternity photos on GCs campus when they were expecting their baby Eli, now 15 months old.

I wouldnt be who I am today if it werent for Greenville, Bethany says.
