Music Lessons: A Nashville Internship

Published: April 13, 2021

New graduate Chase Weber 13 left Greenville College with a degree in audio engineering and a minor in digital media. He took with him more than just knowledge gained from classes and lectures; he also gained invaluable hands-on experiences and industry connections through participating in internship and study abroad opportunities.

The summer before his senior year, Weber accepted an internship at The Brown Owl Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Weber said, I wanted to learn what a real studio environment was like outside of Greenville College labs, and this provided me with an opportunity to do so. I was able to interact with a variety of people and learn how to use professional audio equipment.

During his internship, he was able to interact with notable recording artists, such as Tim Lauer and Tom Bukovac. He worked with a band signed by Tooth and Nail called All Things News. They liked working with Weber, and invited him to work with them on a project at a different studio.

Weber said, They brought me over to a different studio where Sanctus Real was tracking, and I helped time align three songs for their newest album, Run.

Upon completing his summer internship, Weber remained in Nashville to participate in the Best Semester experience at the Contemporary Music Center during the fall semester of his senior year. This allowed him to continue developing his professional networks.

I was able to keep ties at the studio and still book time there every few months. At The Brown Owl, theyre great guys and have a great studio at a more than fair price, said Weber.

Following graduation, Weber married and will return to Nashville with his new bride in July to pursue his dream of working in the music industry. In addition to his work as an audio engineer, Weber also works as a musician. He currently tours part-time with several bands and supplements his audio engineering work by booking sessions.

Weber will continue his audio engineering work in Nashville at the conclusion of his summer touring season.
