Men's tennis splits pair of matches in Moline

MOLINE, Ill. - The men's tennis team resumed their season with a pair of dual matches on Saturday at the Quad Cities Tennis Club. They dropped the opener 6-3 to St. Ambrose before knocking off Knox 6-3 in the nightcap.

In the day's first match, they took on a strong NAIA opponent in St. Ambrose. All three doubles matches were very competitive, with St. Ambrose winning two of them. The lone win for the Panthers was the No. 1 doubles tandem of Alex Dowley and Jon Urshan. They came out strong with an 8-5 win.

In singles play, freshman Nate Wieland gained an impressive three set win in his match at No. 2. Justin McDonald continued his strong play at No. 6 singles and came away with a three set win as well.

After a very short break, the Panthers immediately took to the court to take on Knox College. They were able to gain wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The team of Nate Wieland and Demetrius Bush gained a decisive win at No. 2. Soon after, Code Power and Justin McDonald finished off their opponents with a score of 8-0.

In singles play, the Panthers displayed their depth by winning the bottom four singles positions. Alex Dowley gained a hard fought victory at No. 3 after trailing in his first set. Code Power, Demetrius Bush, and Justin McDonald closed out the scoring for the Panthers.

The Panthers season record now stands at 2-1. They hit the road on Friday to play Franklin College at 6 p.m. in Indianapolis.
