Match Finale Clinches 5-4 Win over NCAA DII Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Freshman Demetrius Bush delivered a heart stopping 7-6, 6-4 win in No. 6 singles play on Thursday night to help edge Maryville University and lift GC mens tennis to impressive win.

It was a complete team performance and every guy played a huge role in the win, commented head coach Brett Brannon.Our motto is every man on every court, and that really played out tonight.

Greenville College found themselves trailing 4-2 heading into the final three matches of the contest, needing a clean sweep to claim the victory. Freshman Alex Dowley started the eventual comeback, winning the third set of his match at No. 4 singles. Following Dowleys lead, sophomore Ryan Haas clawed his way back from losing his first set to win at No. 5 singles.Finally, with the contest on the line and all eyes fixed on the court, the newcomer Bush clinched the GC victory with a 7-6, 6-4 decision in No. 6 singles.

Our guys were committed to playing the right way even when there were many times that it didnt look real good for us, continued Brannon. They fought extremely hard and they really stuck together.

In doubles action, Greenville College captain Ian Wolf and freshman standout Drew Herlein posted an impressive effort in their No. 1 doubles match. The tandem upset one of best teams they will face all year 8-4 and kept the squad alive in the contest.

Every player that played singles and doubles for us notched at least one win, stated GC mainstay Wolf. It was a full team effort, and we are extremely excited about where our team is at right now.

GC mens tennis will return to action on Monday, March 12 as the Panthers travel to Hilton Head Island for their annual Spring Break road trip. The squad will compete in a total of four matches spanning from March 12-15.
