Late Game Heroics Lift Men’s Basketball Past Fontbonne 79-78

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Mens Basketball (11-8, 6-5 SLIAC) eked passed Fontbonne Wednesday night by the slimmest of margins, as the Panthers used a string of key offensive rebounds and clutch free throws to seal the contest.

Seniors KJ Hilliard and Markeith Brown led the Black & Orange in St. Louis, dropping in team highs in both points and rebounds. Hilliard paced the Panthers with a game-high 25 points and five boards and teammate Brown posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The contest proved to be a closely contested battle throughout, with the decisive moments taking place in the final seconds. Leading by four with under a minute to play, a made free-throw and a quick bucket from Fontbonne shaved the margin to only one with seven seconds left in regulation. Inbounding the ball, Greenville utilized a flurry of quick passes and overhead lobs to run out the remainder of the second half, avoiding would-be Griffin foulers and sealing the 79-78 victory.

Greenville shot 77 percent from the stripe in Wednesdays conference bout, knocking in 24-31 from the foul line. Rebounding also played a pivotal role in the road victory as the squad outworked the Griffins on the glass 38-29.

We definitely stole this game on the road, comments second year assistant coach and former GC guard Stephen Groves. Fontbonne shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and over 50 percent from three, but we simply outhustled and outworked them in the second half to seal the win.

With the win GC mens basketball moves back over the .500 mark in SLIAC play and will attempt to build on an 8-3 mark since the start of 2012 this weekend. The Panthers welcome conference opponent Westminster to HJ Long Gymnasium on Saturday, February 4 at 3:00 pm.
