Greenville sending three to NCAA national championships

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division III Mens and Womens Track and Field Committee has announced the participants in the 2016 NCAA Division III Mens and Womens Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Greenville College will have three entries in the championships.

Sprinter Chelsea Gilles enters the 400 meter dash with the NCAA's second best time of 54.93 seconds. In 2015, Gilles qualified for the same event and finished 11th.

Mid-distance runner Andrew Sharp will make his second appearance at the NCAA nationals in the 800 Meter run. Last season, Sharp placed fourth in the event.

Jumper Jarrid Williams will participate in the long jump for the first time. He was seventh in the long jump during the indoor season and will attempt to earn an All-American honor for the third time. He also ran a leg of Greenville's 4x100 meter relay that was seventh in the outdoor national championships in 2015.

Williams is scheduled to participate in the preliminaries and finals on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Gilles will compete on Friday at 5 p.m. in the preliminaries, and the finals are set for 2:20 p.m. Saturday. Sharp will run his preliminary race on Friday at 5:45 p.m., and the finals are slated for 2:50 p.m. on Saturday.

For each mens individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each womens individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.
