Greenville College to Dedicate Renovated Track and Field Facility Wednesday

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The 100 members of the Greenville College men's and women's track and field programs have long desired an updated facility to call its own. Relegated to utilizing various facilities since the expansion of its program, the college recently finalized work on a renovation exceeding over half a million dollars which will allow the program to have the capabilities of hosting meets immediately. A dedication of the facility will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m.

The highlights of the renovation include a variety of additions and improvements. Headlining the list of upgrades was the full replacement of its track, which increased in size from six lanes to eight lanes, after its completion. This will provide the team with additional training space and is single-handedly the most notable feature that will bring meets to Greenville's campus in the future. The last college track meet held in Greenville occurred in 1995. The track has also been provided with markings that will allow them with the ability to change direction of the sprints (100-meter dash and 200-meter dash) based upon wind conditions.

A steeplechase addition will allow the school with the capability of providing space for practice and competition in that event for the first time. The high jump pad has also doubled in size.

Around the existing soccer field, a new throwing cage has been erected at the northeast end of the field, and a javelin runway was created in the southeast corner to allow competition in that event.

The pole vault, triple jump, and long jump runways were resurfaced as well to match the surface of the new track.

Providing oversight of the project as a general contractor was Rooters American Maintenance of Beckemeyer, Ill. The track surface was installed by Track Surfaces Company of Naperville, Ill.

Taking five years to obtain the necessary funding, the project was financed by the generous donations of men and women who provided over 85 percent of the funds spent for the project. The remaining monies were obtained from a portion of a capital improvement grant from the state of Illinois.

The college's track and field program is eager to put the track to use and have already scheduled at least one track meet bringing 5-8 teams to campus on Saturday, April 5, 2014.
