Greenville Choral Union and Orchestra to Perform Handel's Messiah and Rutter's Magnificat

Published: April 13, 2021

The Greenville Choral Union and Orchestra will celebrate their 84th performance of George Frideric Handels oratorio Messiah on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4:00 p.m. in the Whitlock Music Center on the campus of Greenville College. In addition to listening to this perennial favorite, the audience will have opportunity to hear British composer John Rutters Magnifcat and sing carols along with the Choral Union and Orchestra.

The 100-voice Choral Union and the 45-piece Orchestra includes members of south central Illinois communities in addition to students, staff, and faculty members from Greenville College. This year, Gina Malone, a professional soprano from St. Louis, and members of the Choral Union will sing the vocal solos.

Twelve professional instrumentalists from the St. Louis area will join the Greenville Chamber Orchestra, directed by Ms. Blakeley Woessner, instructor of viola and violin at Greenville College. The accompanist for the Choral Union, Ms. Catherine Burge, is also staff accompanist and a piano instructor at GC. Greenville resident Carlo van Ulft, a professional carillonist (Centralia, IL), will serve as organist. Dr. Jeff Wilson, director of choral activities at GC and Music Director of the Greenville Choral Union, will conduct the concert.

Seating for the concert will begin at 3:30 p.m. An offering will be taken to help defray the costs of the concert.

Immediately following the concert there will be a reception at the Tidball Alumni House on the GC campus (at the corner of College Avenue and Elm Street).

For those who are not able to attend the performance, the concert will be broadcast live on WGRN, 89.5 FM.
