Baseball Tops MacMurray 3-2 in Extra Innings

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. GC baseball took the first contest of the weekends three-game set against MacMurray College on a game-winning RBI bunt applied by junior Cole Lawson, delivering the Panthers the 3-2 win.

Locked in a pitching duel with two outs, two on, and the game knotted at two apiece in the tenth inning, Lawson laid down a tough-to-handle poke that earned the go-ahead run for the GC club. Senior ace David Massengill tossed a complete-game, seven hit gem to put the Black & Orange in position for the victory.

Hitters hit and pitcher pitch, said Massengill after the tightly contested duel. It sounds simple, but that is the mentality you have to have on the mound. You have to do your thing and not worry about the bats because the hits will come. That is exactly how it played out, and we are stoked about the win.

Massengill registered five Ks in the ten-inning journey while only allowing two earned. Younger brother Jared Massengill aided David in his second win of the season, leading the Panthers at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort at the dish with a homer.

With the win the Panthers move to 6-14 (4-3 SLIAC) and aim to pick up momentum heading into Saturdays double-header, again facing MC and traveling to Jacksonville to conclude the SLIAC set.
