Baseball: Spring Break Day 3 Ends 0-2

Published: April 13, 2021

AUBURNDALE, Fla. The GC club faced off against Ripon College Thursday, March 17, in day three action of their spring break road trip. Greenville, 0-6 in Florida, fell 13-2 and 7-3 in the double-header while looking for their first win of 2011.

Leading Greenville in the opening loss was senior center fielder David Massengill. Massengill went 1-3, with a run scored.

In the first game of the double-dip, Ripon never trailed, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The first run came on an RBI single, while the other two came via a triple by Ripons Ryan Paul. The Red Hawks added one run apiece in the second and third inning, before exploding for seven runs in the fourth in which the first six batters reached base. RC would finish with three more runs and control the Panthers 13-2.

Michael Wittmer was saddled with the loss for the Panthers, pitching six innings and giving up five earned.

Ripon Colleges Jason Wierschke picked up the victory, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings of work.

Ripon completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory in game two, which saw the Red Hawks rally back from a 3-1 deficit. Though Greenville jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a Kenny Trager sacfly that drove David Massengill home, and an error that scored Kyle Hobar, the Panthers would only add one more run (third inning) and struggle offensively for the rest of the game.

A huge effort in the mid-inning by Ripon put the game out of reach, scoring five runs on two hits in the fourth.

Red Hawk pitcher Tom Albrecht tossed five innings for the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Greenville freshman Tyler Mitchell was charged with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings while allowing only three hits and two earned.

Greenville College Baseball will conclude their spring break 2011 campaign against St. Norbert on Friday. The double-header will take place in Leesburg, Fla. as the Panthers look to claim their first win of the road trip.
