Baseball splits doubleheader with Spalding

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The baseball team split a doubleheader against Spalding in the opening of SLIAC conference action. The Panthers dropped the first game 4-0 before coming behind for a 3-2 win in game two.

In game one, Spalding jumped ahead 2-0 in the second inning and held Greenville without a run. They added two more runs in the top of the sixth.

Mike Hardin went 1-for-3, and Tyler Whitworth was 1-for-2 to gain the Panthers only two hits.

C.J. Opp was the starting pitcher, and he went five innings. Opp surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits and two walks. He struck out four. Opp was relieved by Nathan Garbe who hurled two scoreless innings.

The Panthers got a game winning double by Josh Wheeler in game two as they completed a come-from-behind win.

Once again the Golden Eagles put two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Greenville tied the score in the seventh when Ryan Smith singled to right field with runners on the corners, and Dalton McFarland laced an RBI single to right field.

After McFarland was hit by a pitch with two outs, Wheeler stepped to the plate and delivered his game-winning double.

Ryan Strohm was Greenville's starting pitcher. He went six innings and allowed both Spalding runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four.

Jason Collingwood, Michael Wittmer, and Nick Bifano each went one scoreless inning. Bifano picked up the win to raise his record to 1-1.

The Panthers (2-8) travel to Illinois College for a single game on Wednesday.
