Baseball Splits Double-Dip With Principa; Massengill Superb in Capper

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. GC ace David Massengill worked seven stellar innings to help the Panthers earn a share of Monday afternoons twinbill against Principia College. Greenville dropped the opener 5-2, but took game two 5-1.

Mondays SLIAC battle featured two of the conferences best arms with PCs senior Greg Ball getting the start in game one, and Greenvilles top hurler Massengill at the helm in the nightcap. Both men rank in the top ten in opposing batting avg., strikeouts, hits allowed, runs allowed, and ERA, and were as good as advertised at Robert E. Smith Field in the weeks kick off.

Ball went seven innings while allowing only four hits, two runs, and struck out four Panther batters in opening play of the double-headers sour 5-2 decision. Junior Derek Reckmann tossed three solid frames before the visiting bats of Principia came alive in the fourth and put the game out of reach. The Black and Orange suffered their first loss in six contests, but would quickly avenge the conference defeat.

Greenville immediately got back on track in game two, crushing the ball offensively and piling up runs in the first four innings of play. Massengill set the tone from the mound and helped the club earn the 5-1 win.

GC baseball moves to 10-15 (9-4 SLIAC) with the split and will return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 18 as they play host to Fontbonne University at 6:00 pm.
