Baseball Honors Seniors; Drops Three-Game Set to Golden Eagles

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. Greenville College Athletics and GC Baseball honored six seniors on Saturday for the four years of effort and dedication that each has put forth while wearing the Black & Orange. However, the celebration was short-lived as Spalding took the double-header 13-3 and 5-1 to complete the series sweep of the Panther club.

Seniors honored included Wes Letiza, Daniel Covert, Kyle Hobar, John Wesley Flatt, David Massengill, and Justin Hubbard.

Spalding was quick to spoil the celebration in game one, jumping out to a 9-0 lead through the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles added another four insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to cruise past the Panthers 13-3.

Sophomore pitcher Derek Reckmann was charged the loss in the seven-inning bout, serving three innings while allowing six earned runs on four hits.

David Massengill produced a timely 2-for-3 effort on his senior day, as he led Greenville offensively despite the loss. Massengill notched two RBI and a run scored, helping to account for all three of the clubs runs.

In the second half of the afternoon double-dip, the Panthers again struggled offensively, offering little help to the GC rotation. Greenville tallied only one run in seven innings and was out distanced by SU once again, this time 5-1.

Lefty Cody Hinterscher was dealt the loss, pitching four and one-third innings while giving up five earned on seven hits.

Denver, Co. native Kenny Trager led the efforts at the plate in the loss. The sophomore third baseman went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Outfielder Cole Lawson also did his part with the bat, poking three hits in three at-bats in the 5-1 defeat.

Although ending the 2011 regular season with three consecutive losses, the Panthers are riding some momentum heading into the SLIAC tournament. The Black & Orange posted a record of 16-8 in the conference and finished third in the regular season standings, while winning nine of their last twelve games and clinching the number two seed in next weeks SLIAC tournament.

The Panthers will next gear up for the double elimination format 2011 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament held at Highland, Ill. Greenville is slated to clash with Fontbonne University at 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 12, and will be the first of a scheduled double-header with play pending tournament result.
