Baseball Ekes Past Fontbonne 2-1 in Pitchers Duel

Published: April 13, 2021

ST. LOUIS, Mo. A lighting malfunction halted the second half of Tuesday nights scheduled SLIAC double-header, but not before GC baseball managed a close 2-1 victory over Fontbonne in game one action.

Fontbonne University (11-14, 8-2 SLIAC) cited a lighting malfunction in the fourth inning of Tuesdays nightcap that suspended play and forced a standstill that has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, April 18 in Greenville, Ill. Preceding the delay, the Panthers took the opener 2-1 behind the arms of transfer Jared Massengill and junior Scotty Voyles.

Massengill, who has been hot offensively for the Black & Orange, took to the mound and pitched four innings and allowed only one run. Voyles relieved the slugger turned pitcher in the fifth and sealed the eventual 2-1 win.

Freshman first baseman Ryan Smith headlined the GC notables at the dish, raking in an RBI double that aided the teams two-run posting.

Greenville College baseball (9-14, 7-3 SLIAC) will next travel to Elsah, Ill. on Friday, April 13 and begin the first of a three-game set against Principia College. Following Friday nights tilt, the club will return home to Robert E. Smith field on Saturday and host PC in an afternoon pair to wrap up the SLIAC series.
