Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Illinois Wesleyan

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. - After a Saturday postponement, the baseball team resumed play against NCAA Division III defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan in a Monday afternoon doubleheader. Greenville failed to produce offensively in the two games, dropping contests 9-1 and 3-0 to the Titans.

The Panthers were limited by Illinois Wesleyan pitcher Jason Pankau in game one. Pankau pitched six shutout innings of one-hit baseball in the opener to stunt any production from the Panthers. Justin Hubbard managed two hits for the Panthers and scored Greenville's lone run. Derek Reckmann was Greenville's losing pitcher, tossing four innings and allowing four runs.

The night cap showcased much of the same as junior Joe Sweeney dealt six quality innings and turned the game over to fellow junior Pat Hayn who tossed a shutout inning to close the doubleheader. Greenville mounted a one-out rally in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases and bringing the winning run to the plate. However, Hayn struck out pinch hitter Reid Cerutti and Scott Voyles bounced into a fielder's choice to the shortstop to end the game.

Voyles and Daniel Covert each had two hits for Greenville. Covert also tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five. Covert was saddled with the losing decision.

The baseball team (0-3) will next take the diamond in Winter Haven, Fla., as they will kick off an eight-game spring trip on Monday, March 14.
