Baseball Claims Pivotal Two-Game Set at Principia Behind Hinterscher’s 15 K’s

Published: April 13, 2021

ELSAH, Ill. GC Baseball moved to 11-5 in conference play on Thursday night as they pushed past SLIAC foe Principia in double-header action under the lights in Elsah. Greenville edged the opener 5-4, and freshman pitcher Cody Hinterscher dominated game two, going seven innings with 15 strikeouts to lead the Black & Orange to the 9-3 victory.

Game one saw senior pitcher Daniel Covert earn the win, with closer Scotty Voyles coming in to seal the deal 5-4 and pick up the save.

At the plate GC got key production from Kenny Trager and Alex Quirin. Trager went 1-3 with a clutch RBI single, and Quirin dropped a timely solo homerun (second of the season) to headline the efforts offensively.

The nightcap was simply dominated by the lefty Hinterscher. The two-seam fastball was two much for the hitters of Principia as the freshman dealt 15 strikeouts, with two walks and three runs on three hits with three earned in the complete game win.

Offensively David Massengill was on his game, hitting 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored. Covert also turned in a nice game two with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate and an RBI double.

Greenville, now 12-18 (11-5 SLIAC) on the season, holds a slim two-game lead over Westminster College for the third spot in conference. GC will again travel to Elsah, Ill. this afternoon and take on Westminster in a key SLIAC battle slated for 5:00 pm. The Panthers will then turn around on Saturday and play host Principa at 1:00 pm.
