An Early Homecoming for Edwin Estevez '94

Published: April 13, 2021

Homecoming came early for Edwin Estevez 94 this year four months early to be exact.

July 1 marked Dr. Edwin Estevezs official return to his alma mater as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. Edwin counts his personal homecoming as a delight and privilege. The GC community counts it as a testament to its rich heritage of global reach.

My familys connection to Greenville College dates back to 1927, Edwin explains.

That was the year his maternal grandparents joined the staff of Instituto Evangelico, a boarding school and seminary in the Dominican Republic started by Free Methodist missionaries and directed over the years by a succession of GC graduates. By 1945, Edwins paternal grandparents also worked at the school.

Familiarity with the Free Methodist Church and GC alumni made GC a natural choice for Edwin and his siblings. After his undergraduate studies, Edwin pursued a masters degree from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University and returned to GC to teach sociology and social work from 2000 to 2005. He earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Louis University and then filled teaching and research posts at Southeastern University and University of South Florida respectively.

Edwins understanding of the Greenville College experience and its heritage of global impact will serve him well as GC focuses on expanding its international reach and extending that heritage to a new generation of students.

We are headed into a challenging and very difficult phase in the growth and development of our beloved institution, he observes. These challenges will require an outpouring of the Fruit of the Spirit from our lives beyond our human capacity. But our challenges are not bigger than our faith.

In addition to his academic credentials, Edwin is an ordained minister with the Free Methodist Church of North America and served as executive pastor for Tampa Spanish Free Methodist Church. The college community welcomes the Estevez family including Edwins wife, Jessica, and daughters Taina, age 12, and Natalia, age 10.
