2015 Schoenhals Fine Arts Symposium to Feature Artist Kenneth Steinbach

Greenville College has announced Kenneth Steinbach as this years guest artist for the Schoenhals Fine Arts Symposium. Steinbach will open an exhibit of his work in the Rowland Art Gallery of Greenville Colleges Maves Art Center from 7 8:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2. The exhibit will feature Steinbachs sculptures Under the Rose and Untitled (Lambs Ear), among others. His exhibit will run through Friday, April 3 in the Rowland Gallery of Maves Art Center. Exhibits in the Rowland Gallery are free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Steinbach will also be the featured speaker for chapel on March 2 at 9:30 a.m. in the Wilson Recital Hall of the Whitlock Music Center. Later that afternoon, he will give a colloquium on his artwork at 3:30 p.m. in the Maves Art Center.
Kenneth Steinbach is a Minneapolis based artist who uses a variety of media and approaches, but works principally in sculpture. His work explores the mythologies we attach to spaces and objects, those histories and meanings that are discarded as we continually revise our understandings of our world. About his work he states: "I am curious about the stories that are etched into our physical environment, the objects, materialsand spaces that are invested with meanings.
A graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art in Sculpture,Steinbachisthe recipient of the2014 Arlin G. Meyer Prizefrom the Lilly Fellows Foundation. 2012-2014 solo exhibits includeMappa Mundiat the Silverwood Park Gallery in Minneapolis,Kenneth Steinbach atCirca Gallery in Minneapolis,Theories of Forgettingat St. Johns University, and the Walking: New Forests of Thoreau's America at the College of Visual Arts. His workwas also included in Americana at the Soap Factory (curated by Ben Heywood) and Walker on the Green at the Walker Art Center (with David Denninger) in 2014. He is Professor of Art at Bethel University, where he teachesclasses in Three Dimensional Visual Thinking, Sculpture, Senior Seminar in Art, and Creative Practices. Kenneth lives in Shoreview with his wife Kari a freelance theater director. They have two daughters; Kylie and Harper Leigh, who are also involved in the arts.
The Schoenhals Fine Arts Symposium is made possible by the generosity of the late Dr. Lawrence and Ruth Boyd Schoenhals, graduates of Greenville College with degrees in music and art. The purpose of the symposium is to integrate music, visual arts and the Christian faith by bringing to the Greenville College campus outstanding Christian artists and scholars who have achieved stature in their respective fields within the classical tradition without compromising either their artistic integrity or their Christian commitment. The event alternates between music and visual art each year.
