Why does Greenville use Contribution Allocation?

At Greenville University, our goal is to steward every gift with integrity, care, and long-term impact. While many gifts are designated for specific purposes such as scholarships, academic programs, or campus initiatives, there are real and necessary costs associated with administering, supporting, and sustaining those efforts. The contribution allocation helps ensure that donor-funded programs are managed responsibly and remain strong for years to come.

What does Contribution Allocation support?

The contribution allocation helps fund the essential infrastructure that allows donor generosity to make a lasting difference, including:

  • Gift processing, receipting, and compliance
  • Financial oversight, reporting, and audits
  • Donor stewardship and communication
  • Advancement systems and staff support
  • Facilities and utilities that support University-wide operations

These resources ensure that designated gifts are stewarded with excellence and accountability.

Is this common practice?

Yes. Many colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations use a contribution allocation (sometimes referred to as a gift assessment or administrative allocation) to support core operational needs. This approach reflects widely accepted best practices across higher education and helps institutions remain financially sustainable while honoring donor intent.

How does Contribution Allocation work?

Beginning April 1, a contribution allocation of 15% will be applied to philanthropic gifts made to Greenville University.

For example:

  • A $10,000 gift designated for a scholarship results in:
    • $8,500 supporting the scholarship
    • $1,500 supporting the University’s general operating fund

The general operating fund supports the people, systems, and infrastructure that make donor impact possible.

Are there any exceptions?

Certain types of gifts may be exempt from the contribution allocation when required by law, grant restrictions, or donor intent. Examples may include estate gifts, grants that prohibit administrative allocations, gifts in kind, or other special circumstances. Exemptions are reviewed and approved by University leadership in consultation with Advancement and Finance to ensure consistent and appropriate application.

Our commitment to Donors...

We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our donors and the trust they place in Greenville University. We are committed to transparency, thoughtful stewardship, and honoring donor intent while also ensuring the long-term strength of the University and the programs our students rely on. If you have questions about the contribution allocation or how your gift will be used, we welcome the opportunity to connect with you.
