Men's Basketball Pulls into Fifth Place Conference Tie with 66-61 Win Over Westminster

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The men's basketball team earned a critical 66-61 win on Saturday against Westminster.  At the half, the Panthers led by 12 points but saw their lead eliminated by Westminster in the second half.  A bucket by Jonas McBride in the final minute pushed the Panther lead to three, and K.J. Hilliard sank two free throws with eight seconds remaining to seal the win.

Leading scorers of the night consisted of McBride, Markeith Brown, and Hilliard. McBride and Brown both dropped in 10 points, and Hilliard followed with nine.  Ben Giertz, Travis Garrison, Alex Mumphard, and Dondrale Campbell added a combined total of 26 points, each putting up six with the exception of Campbell who totaled eight.

Simon Martin put in his work on the glass, bringing down five rebounds in the second half, which also gave him the leading rebounding mark for the game. The Panthers shot 100 percent at the free throw line, sinking 9-of-9.

With the win, the Panthers built on their record in the new year, moving up to a 9-3 mark since the start of 2012.  They have a 12-8 (7-5 SLIAC) record.  The Panthers next welcome conference opponent MacMurray to H.J. Long Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m.
