It took four days before they were able to finish the game, but the Panthers 21-7 win over MacMurray Monday afternoon was the 294th victory for Greenville College head baseball coach Lynn Carlson. The victory tied him with long-time baseball coach Dave Altopp for most wins as Panther skipper. It only took two hours for Carlson to break the record as the Panthers rolled to a 14-0 win over MacMurray in the regularly scheduled game later Monday afternoon.
In 14 years as baseball coach, Carlson has a career record of 295-263-2 in a coaching career at Greenville that started in 1997. He was the SLIAC coach of the year in 2006 after leading the Panthers to a regular season conference championship, and his teams have qualified for six consecutive SLIAC tournaments, placing second in 2006 and 2007. His 14 years as head coach ranks second to Altopp's 16 seasons. Bob "Ish" Smith is third with 11 years as head baseball coach and 141 wins.
While a student at Greenville College, Carlson competed in men's basketball and baseball before signing a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1990 and pitching in the Pirates' and San Diego Padres' organizations. He returned to Greenville College and graduated in 1993. He also holds a master's degree from the University of Kentucky.
