The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for students who have a Bachelor's Degree and would like to continue their education in order to teach. Along with a Master of Arts Degree, students become prepared to receive their Illinois Professional Educators License with an endorsement in elementary education (1-6).

Program Features

  • An elementary endorsement is offered
  • Designed to prepare students to be licensed to teach in the State of Illinois
  • Course work schedule is tailored to working adults
  • Courses include state-mandated field experiences in addition to regular course work
  • Student teaching follows course work, field experience, and required Illinois testing
  • Special Education and Teaching English as a Second Language are also available
  • Additional prerequisite courses are required

Format of MAT

  • Locations: Kaskaskia College in Centralia, IL; Lincoln Christian University in Lincoln, IL; Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, IL and Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL.
  • Convenient times: Evening courses every other week with an online component
  • Convenient to complete: Time for completion will vary depending on previous individual course work. Potentially in as few as 24 months.  This includes a 14 week student teaching experience (Summer classes not required).
  • Students are required to complete field experience hours with each course in order to enrich their experience in the program.
