Job Description:

Greenville University invites applications and nominations of strong candidates for a Dean of the School of Education to begin June/July 2018. This individual will provide general oversight and ongoing direction for the school, including all faculty, staff, curriculum, and students. Contract is negotiable, but is typically 10-12 months, inclusive of faculty status.  

GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY: The University is located 50 miles east of St. Louis in an attractive residential community of approximately 7,000 people. Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with faculty and other administrators to develop and promote a vision for the Teacher Education program that will help ensure the school’s continued growth and development.  
  • Ensure that all certification programs meet state requirements for accreditation.
  • Ensure that each teacher education program is academically challenging, engaging, and effective in producing desired educational outcomes.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of faculty (full-time and adjunct).
  • Promote faculty development to ensure outstanding pedagogy, intentional integration of faith and learning, and quality scholarship and service.
  • Be an active participant at the state level in representing the Greenville University School of Education with state entities, such as the Illinois State Board of Education and the State Educator Preparation and Licensure Board.
  • Identify and serve as an advocate for budget needs in the teacher education programs.  Represent those needs to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.  When asked by the president, serve on the budget committee.
  • Work with staff in maintaining national accreditation with the CAEP-Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.
  • Work cooperatively with the Dean of Graduate Studies in developing and maintaining quality graduate education programs.
  • Serve on the Graduate Academic Affairs Committee.
  • Serve as an ex officio member on the COTE-Committee on Teacher Education. 
  • Respond to student concerns and petitions. 
  • Chair meetings of school faculty.
  • Help develop faculty and staff. Review the performance of the assistant dean and other faculty or staff as necessary.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and participate on the Deans’ Council.
  • Serve as the primary liaison working with Education Program Directors at our UTEP partner schools.

Skills/Necessary prerequisites for effective performance:        

  • The ability to publicly express the strengths and value of a teacher education in the context of a Christian liberal arts institution to students, parents, faculty, and administrators. 
  • Administrative skill, ideally including experience with both personnel and academic budgeting. 
  • Demonstrated collegiality and the ability to work well with people who hold perspectives different than one’s own. 
  • The ability to produce publishable scholarship and engage with professional organizations.
  • Skill in relating Christian faith to an understanding of his or her discipline and the ability to articulate the importance of integrating faith and learning to faculty and students.
  • The achievement of tenure and the rank of at least associate professor at a college or university.
  • A vibrant personal Christian faith commitment.

Compensation:

Salary is based on academic preparation and years of relevant experience. The University also provides a generous benefits package that includes health, disability, and retirement plans, as well as a tuition waiver for dependents at Greenville University and a tuition exchange program with 75+ other Christian Universities.

Preferred Qualifications:

A doctoral degree in teacher education and, preferably, certification to teach at the K-12 level.  The successful candidate will demonstrate both knowledge and experience in best practices within the field and a commitment to adapting to the changing nature of elementary and secondary education.  Candidates with a record of successful university teaching, active and on-going scholarship, and sustained administrative experience will be favorably considered.  Candidates must be dedicated to undergraduate and graduate teaching and committed to serving as a role model for students within a Christian academic community.  A background in faith/learning integration and its implications for the field of education is desired.  A vibrant personal Christian faith commitment is required.
